General admission requirements for all programs

To submit your application online, you will need:

  • Scanned copies of transcripts for all post-secondary institutions attended (unofficial transcripts). Be sure to include both the front and back side of the transcript in your upload. International applicants should also ensure they upload an English translation if the transcript is not in English and their proof of degree. Official transcripts will be required if admitted (including notarized English translations as required). More information can be found on the transcripts page.
  • A statement of academic interest.
  • Name and contact information for your references (an institutional email address is required). Note that your references should be submitted no later than 2 weeks after the published deadline for your program. Please review our guide to tracking your application to monitor receipt of your references.
  • International applicants will also need to submit official English Language Requirement Test Scores (if required). For full details, please review the English Language Proficiency section of our website.

Program-specific requirements


MA Development Economics

Applicants to this program normally should hold a four-year Bachelor's degree that is the equivalent of a ÂÜÀòÉäÇø degree in Economics. Applicants do not need to identify a supervisor at the point of application. This program admits to course-based only. Students may be approved to transfer to a project or thesis after completion of 4 courses (at the discretion of the program).

Required academic background

Applicants normally should have a four-year undergraduate degree in Economics (or equivalent). We accept applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds and other degrees may be considered. However, applicants should demonstrate a background (coursework) in Macro and Micro Economics at an introductory and intermediate level as well as prior coursework in Econometrics. Applicants who have not completed an Econometrics course equivalent to at ÂÜÀòÉäÇø will be required to complete this course as a part of their graduate degree if admitted. Because admission to this program is highly competitive, strong applications are those that include the necessary academic preparation for success in the degree.

Relevant experience

In the online application, you will be asked to demonstrate any experience you have with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Private/Public Sector and volunteer work experience related to this degree. Review the degree requirements here for more details about this degree.

Statement of interest

MA Disability Management

This program is only offered part-time and by distance (online).  Applicants must provide a Criminal Record Check search result after receiving an offer of admission and before the first day of classes. The search result is not required with the application. 

International applicants are not eligible for a study permit as this is a part-time program delivered online.  

Some electives may be available on campus. Students are admitted to the comprehensive examination and may only request to transfer into a thesis one they have started their program. If a student is later permitted to complete a thesis, they will be required to travel to the Prince George campus to fulfill some of their thesis requirements.

International applicants - Local criminal record search

If you have a current criminal record search from your local police authority, we encourage you to upload this with your application. If admitted, a local criminal record check result will be required. Uploading a copy of your local criminal record search can expedite admission if you are later offered a seat. Including this document is not required for review of your admissibility but you will not be permitted to register if you are admitted until this is received.


MA English

This program can be completed via coursework and a major research paper/creative project or coursework and a thesis/creative thesis. 

Applicants must demonstrate a background in upper level (3rd and 4th year) literature studies coursework. Generally, applicants with a linguistics focused degree and no coursework in literature studies (or supplemental experience) are not competitive for admission. You will be asked to list your upper level coursework on your application.

Prospective supervisor required

Applicants are required to contact a prospective supervisor whose research interests closely align with their own and advise the potential supervisor on which pathway they are applying for (thesis or course-based).  The applicant is must include the potential supervisor's email confirmation with the application, preferably in PDF form. Applications will NOT be able to submit an application without this confirmation.   Since admission into this program is highly competitive, the potential supervisor agreement does not guarantee admission into the MA English program.

Creative thesis applicants

Permission to undertake a creative thesis will be at the discretion of the Program, and will require that an applicant submit a proposal along with a substantial portfolio of previous creative work (e.g., published writing, 8-10 pages of original poetry, 20-25 pages of prose (i.e., a short story or novel excerpt), a dramatic script or screenplay, or a combination of these genres). The proposal should outline the form, scope, and subject matter of the Creative Writing thesis. In addition, applicants must demonstrate some critical and theoretical awareness of the approach they plan to take for the creative thesis. 


MA First Nations Studies

The MA First Nation Studies program is currently not being offered 

The ÂÜÀòÉäÇø MA program in First Nations Studies establishes the points of view of First Nations people and communities as the starting point for description and analysis and contextualizes issues from this perspective. Courses orient students to question underlying assumptions of everyday study. A special emphasis is placed on creating opportunities for students to learn from and about the First Nations of the north. This program includes courses taught in First Nations communities, internships, and community-based research projects. Each student’s program culminates in completion of either a thesis or major project.

In addition to the high priority given to the First Nations of northern British Columbia, courses include topics relevant to the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada and indigenous peoples of the world.

The areas of study within the program are:

  • First Nations Issues and Approaches, emphasizing the development of theory and method for the understanding of contemporary issues;
  • Northern Nations, which facilitates with the development of skills, knowledge, and experience in the study of the languages and cultures of northern British Columbia; and
  • Aboriginal Health and Healing. 

Relationships with faculty in other graduate programs at ÂÜÀòÉäÇø enrich the options for interdisciplinary work in areas such as Health Sciences, Education, Political Science,Gender Studies, English, History, Environmental Studies, and Geography.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate a general knowledge of the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. At a minimum, this knowledge must be comparable in scope and depth to the material covered in FNST 100-3 The Aboriginal Peoples of Canada.

Statement of interest

This degree also offers opportunities to engage with community - is this something you are comfortable with?  Please explain. 

Prospective supervisor identification

Applicants are not required to contact a supervisor or have the agreement of a prospective supervisor to review their application before applying. However, in your application, you will need to identify a faculty member whose research interests closely align with your own.  

Before applying, you should start by researching our faculty members so that you can identify someone you feel is a good fit for your interests.

Language requirement

There are no language requirements. However, students should be aware that command of one or more languages other than English may be necessary in order to pursue particular types of research.


MA Gender Studies

The MA Gender Studies program is currently not being offered

The Gender Studies MA program at ÂÜÀòÉäÇø offers the opportunity to work with scholars in a variety of disciplines who share a focus on women and/or gender as a category of analysis. Students can apply to complete either coursework and a major research paper or a thesis and you will be asked to indicate your preference at the point of application. However, the program will decide which pathway you are admitted to, if you are offered admission.

Prospective supervisor required

Applicants are required to contact a prospective supervisor whose research interests closely align with their own and advise the potential supervisor on which pathway they are applying for (thesis or course-based).  The applicant must include the potential supervisor's email confirmation with the application, preferably in PDF form. Applications will NOT be able to submit an application without this confirmation.   Since admission into this program is highly competitive, the potential supervisor agreement does not guarantee admission into the MA Gender Studies program.

The most effective statements detail the applicant’s educational and professional history, academic interests and educational goals, and professional aspirations. Your Statement of Interest should also detail (1) how you believe ÂÜÀòÉäÇø’s Gender Studies MA aligns with your goals and (2) the specific coursework and research you hope to undertake whilst completing the program. If you do not have a background in Gender Studies, please explain the genesis of your interest in the topic, detail any volunteer or professional experience in the area, and describe any skills related to gender-based analysis and study.

MA History

The program only offers a Fall intake.

This program can be completed via coursework and a major research paper or coursework and a thesis/project.

Your statement should include an outline of your proposed program of study, including the research question you wish to address, its historical, historiographical, and methodological significance, and the sources you will use for this project.

MA International Studies

All students are normally admitted into a course-based program. Students wishing to transfer to a thesis- or a research paper-based program may apply to do so in accordance with program rules after completing 12 credit hours.

This program has limited seats, so please be aware that Application packages should be carefully prepared to best represent the applicant for consideration by the selection committee.

MA Political Science

The Political Science graduate program provides students with an advanced education in the discipline of Political Science at all levels including local, regional, national and international spheres. We specialize in comparative politics, political philosophy and Aboriginal-state relations, with additional specialties in other areas. Each student’s program of study is designed individually to meet his or her scholarly interests. Students have the option of completing a major research paper (course-based), thesis or project to meet graduation requirements and applicants are required to indicate their preference at the point of application.

Degree requirement for admission

Applicants to the MA Political Science Program normally should have a four-year baccalaureate degree in Political Science. ÂÜÀòÉäÇø and the Political Science Program are committed to interdisciplinary co-operation, so applicants without undergraduate majors in Political Science may be considered with special provisions made regarding course work, project and thesis research programs.  But please be aware, that applicants who have completed upper-level political science courses or have a four-year baccalaureate degree in political science will be assessed first. 

This program has limited seats, so please be aware that application packages should be carefully prepared to best represent the applicant for consideration by the selection committee.  Applicants with who have completed upper-level political science courses or have a four-year baccalaureate degree in political science will be assessed first. 

ÂÜÀòÉäÇø has a number of research institutes that focus on the social, political, and economic concerns of Northern British Columbia and similar regions elsewhere. Research among faculty in Political Science includes the mapping of aboriginal land claims in Russia, local government reform in Siberia, and analyses of public services and the quality of life of northern communities. Related research from faculty in other disciplines includes resource-community sustainability, health problems of aboriginal people in Northern British Columbia and Siberia, and Northern British Columbia child welfare issues.

MA and MSc Interdisciplinary Studies

Interdisciplinary Studies is a student-designed program that provides you with a concrete set of theories methodologies that you can apply to a research project of your choosing. The program encourages you to think in 'out of the box' ways, beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries, from a myriad of vantage points, in a creative and individualized fashion.

This program is delivered from the Prince George campus, but mode of instruction will vary depending on the individualized program of study and may be remote, in-person or a combination.

There are two-degree options within Interdisciplinary Studies at ÂÜÀòÉäÇø: a Master of Arts (MA) and a Master of Science (MSc).

Master of Arts (MA)

The MA option in Interdisciplinary Studies is specifically designed to enable students to pursue intellectual development outside the constraints of traditional disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences; and

Master of Science (MSc)

The MSc option in Interdisciplinary Studies is specifically designed to enable students to go beyond the constraints of traditional disciplines in the Physical and Life Sciences.

Research proposal

This is uploaded at the time of application so have it ready before you start your application. 

Your proposal will be a one-page synopsis of what you want to study. It is your proposed research project. You need to write a research question that you hope to answer. You need to explain how you would like to answer that question and you need to explain how the project is interdisciplinary in nature and why your Prospective Supervisor is a good fit.

Your proposed research project is a research statement explaining why and how you want to work on the project you are proposing.

Work with prospective supervisor to hone your research proposal. Explain how your research proposal is interdisciplinary in nature.

Remember the people reviewing your application want to understand why your research could not take place in a single discipline. You must clearly identify why your research by working across disciplines.

Prospective supervisor agreement

Anyone at ÂÜÀòÉäÇø who is a full-time faculty member has the potential to supervise an IDIS student. Ideally your prospective supervisor is someone whose research work you admire and who undertakes research that fits with what you want to study. Remember: you need to be in touch with this person as part of the application process.

Before you approach a prospective supervisor, we recommend you review our tips for finding a supervisor.  Our faculty members receive a high volume of inquiries from prospective students so you'll want to make sure your approach is well thought out.  You can find information about our faculty members areas of research and expertise.

Applicants are required to contact a prospective supervisor whose research interests closely align with their own.  If you are writing an email to a potential supervisor, remember to make the subject heading line clear. Something such as "IDIS graduate supervision requested" is a good place to start. 

The IDIS Prospective Supervisor Agreement Form needs to be completed by you, your potential supervisor(s), the IDIS Chair and the Program’s Dean. Once you have discussed your program of research with your potential supervisor(s), complete your section of the form and send it to them for their signatures. They will in turn send the form to the Program Chair and Dean for completion before sending it back to you.

The applicant is then required to include the completed and signed prospective supervisor agreement form with the application before submission.  Since admission into this program is highly competitive, the supervisor agreement does not guarantee admission into the Program.

MASc - Master of Applied Science, Engineering

Recommended timeline for the MASc degree is two years as a full-time student.

As a student, you will work closely with the School of Engineering faculty and establish expertise in your chosen specialization with a focus on addressing engineering challenges specific to the North and cold environments. Your work over the course of this 30-credit degree will culminate in the development of an original research project and/or thesis.

This program is for candidates who wish to develop career interests related to applied scientific research or who intend to pursue further academic research degrees.

MEng - Master of Engineering, Integrated Wood Design

The Master of Engineering in Integrated Wood Design (MEng) educates students in the field of modern wood structures with a focus on up-to-date structural design, seismic design and mixed structures, as well as building physics, energy efficiency and sustainability.

The program’s aim is to educate and train qualified professionals and engineers to become leaders in the field of wood engineering.

Our students come from a variety of undergraduate programs from British Columbia, Canada, and all over the world to develop the knowledge and design skills that will contribute to the evolution and innovation occurring in the construction industry.

Degree requirement

Applicants are required to hold a four-year (120 credit hours) baccalaureate degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized institution.

English language requirement

For entry into the Master of Engineering, Integrated Wood Design degree program, students who do not meet the exemptions indicated in Section 1.1 must fulfill the English Language Requirements outlined below.

Score requirements must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Duolingo overall score of 135, with no individual subscore below 125; or
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 7.0 overall, with not less than 6.5 in any of the four modules; or
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 100 in the internet-based test, with not less than 25 in any of the Reading, Listening, Writing or Speaking components; or equivalent other TOEFL score; or
  • the equivalent Master of Engineering, Integrated Wood Design level on other test score accepted by the University.

MBA - Master of Business Administration

The program is designed to allow professionals to complete their degree within two years while continuing to work full-time.  Admission is highly competitive, and we encourage applicants to apply early.

The MBA program is offered at 2 locations. Our Vancouver and Prince George intakes accept both domestic and international applicants.

Successful applicants will start their program in the course-based stream. There are a limited number of seats available to complete a project and well-qualified students who are succeeding in their program may request consideration for transfer into the project stream at a later date.

Required degree and experience

The program may consider exceptional admission for well-qualified domestic applicants who do not have a Bachelor's degree. International applicants must hold the equivalent of a Bachelor's degree (applicants without a degree will not be considered).

All applicants must have a minimum of three years of work experience in a managerial or professional position with a minimum of three years direct management experience. This experience must be clearly articulated in your application and should include supervisory and operational decision making responsibilities (excluding any training period). These responsibilities must be at a medium level of people and informational complexity or higher, e.g; analyzing budget data, coordination the activities of subordinates. 

Supplemental application

You are required to upload a completed supplemental application form in your online application.

Detailed resume or curriculum vitae

You will be asked to upload a detailed resume or a curriculum vitae (C.V.) as part of the application.

Tuition agreement

You are required to upload a signed MBA tuition agreement form with your application.

International applicants - proof of degree and transcript

International applicants must hold, at a minimum, a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent. You are required to upload proof of degree completion as well as unofficial transcripts at the point of application. ÂÜÀòÉäÇø requires both the translated and the original copies of both the transcript and proof of degree.  Please note that you must be able to demonstrate required managerial experience in your application.


MBA - Graduate Certificate in Change Leadership

Please be aware that this certificate is still in development and is currently not being offered. 

This graduate certificate is available to domestic applicants only.   

This certificate is a subset of our full MBA program that provides students with the skills to analyse the structure of their organizations and help businesses navigate through organizational change. As organizations face dynamic changes in the business environment, the need to pivot quickly becomes a valuable skill for all employees. People with these skills are needed in a diverse set of organizations, from large government organizations to small local companies. Students in this program acquire the skills to understand their organizations, analyse issues and problems, and effect change. MBA students who complete the degree and take COMM 738-3 Change Management are also eligible for the certificate.

  1. Successful applicants can take the program as a stand-alone and graduate in the certificate. 
  2. Graduate Students who are taking the certificate and are maintaining a 3.0 GPA may be permitted to apply to the MBA Program.

Exceptional Admission

Under special circumstances, applications from applicants who do not possess an undergraduate degree, have a three-year undergraduate degree or who have an undergraduate degree with a grade point average of less than 3.0 (B) in the last 60 credit hours may be considered.

Normally this will equate to an acceptable professional designation and at least six years of managerial experience with supervisory and operational decision-making responsibilities.

We accept applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds and no specific degree is required. However, if you do not hold a Bachelor of Commerce or equivalent degree, you will need to demonstrate sufficient preparation in mathematics and statistics as well as demonstrating background preparation in your chosen area of MSc specialization (e.g. Accounting, Finance, etc.).

You will also be asked in your application to list any related academic courses, training, skills and certificates. This is where you should address how you meet the requirements for success in the program outlined above.

Research proposal

This is a highly competitive program with limited available seats and is geared towards applicants with some relevant experience in the field. We prioritize admission for applicants:

  • For whom at least 2 years has pass since their Baccalaureate degree was awarded and
  • Have worked (paid or volunteer) in a helping capacity at a counselling-related or teaching-related setting since receiving their degree.

International applicants must ensure their application includes evidence of direct counselling experience (at least 2 years). Applicants should also consider that a high aptitude for written and spoken English is a core requirement to succeed in this program. Newly admitted students are required to submit a British Columbia Criminal Record Check. The MSc in Psychology at ÂÜÀòÉäÇø is a research-focused degree that provides breadth in the substantive and methodological areas of Psychology, with a focus on health and human psychology. MScN Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)

The Master of Science in Nursing: Family Nurse Practitioner Program (FNP) is a practice-oriented, theory-based degree that prepares graduates to be autonomous practitioners, leaders, role models, and educators in primary health care. The focus of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program is general family practice—that is care for individuals, families, groups and communities across all life stages. Family Nurse Practitioners are health professionals who have achieved the advanced nursing practice competencies at the graduate level of nursing education. Nurse Practitioners, who are regulated by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives, provide health care services from a holistic nursing perspective, integrated with the autonomous diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness, including ordering diagnostic tests and prescribing medications.

Indigenous Child and Youth Mental Health Graduate Certificate

This program is offered online only.

The Indigenous Child and Youth Mental Health Graduate Certificate program is open to Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Child and Youth Care graduates. Those with related Bachelor-level degrees may also be eligible to apply, subject to the approval of the Chair of the School of Social Work.  Those with a Master of Social Work or related Master's-level degree are also eligible to apply.

Graduate students in social work and other disciplines may take individual certificate courses as electives subject to approval of the Chair of the School of Social Work. Students wishing to audit coursework in the Certificate program may also do so subject to the approval of the Chair of the School of Social Work and to ÂÜÀòÉäÇø admitting and auditing regulations and policies set out in the graduate academic calendar. Courses taken for audit only do not earn academic credit.

The Certificate is designed for students who see to practice in the area of Indigenous child and youth mental health in northern and remote communities, with a focus on working with children and youth who are experiencing significant mental health issues or who are at high risk. The certificate consists of 18 credit hours of 600-level course work.

Admission into the Certificate program is limited and requires the recommendation of the Chair of the School of Social Work.

MNRES Master of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies

The Master of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies (MNRES) is an interdisciplinary degree offering students the chance to undertake research that crosses science and social science/humanities boundaries or that is outside the normal scope of the MA or MSc. Students complete either a research based thesis or a project which allows more applied research opportunities.

Applicants must have a minimum 3.67 (or equivalent) cumulative GPA on graded graduate-level coursework to be considered for admission.
